In 2010, I proposed the following topic for the magazine Continuum, of Itaú Cultural: to investigate the musical diversity in favelas, going much beyond the cliché that says in the periphery people only listen to rap and funk. The photographer Ratão Diniz and I then went to the Complexo de Favelas da Maré, in Rio de Janeiro, where we came across a man who plays the accordion, a rock’n’roll bar, and a heavy metal group. I have also been in Morro Santa Tereza in Porto Alegre and talked to specialists.
